I, Liudmyla Vitkovska, am a member of the National Union of Folk Art Masters of Ukraine and an Honored Master of Folk Creativity of Ukraine.
I was born on January 23, 1950, in the village of Novi Mlyny in Borznyansky district, Chernihiv region, into a family of a doctor.
At the age of 7, I became an orphan. My grandmother raised me along with my older brother. During my childhood and youth, I enjoyed drawing, reading books, and writing poetry. Books replaced many things in my life during difficult orphan years, helping me live and explore the world.
Since my school years, I was interested in the works of artists, especially folk masters of decorative painting such as Maria Pryimachenko, Hanna Sobachko-Shostak, and Paraska Vlasenko.
After marriage, I lived in Kherson, where my husband, Veniamin Vitkovsky, was from. I graduated with honors from the Kherson Cultural and Educational School but could not continue my education due to family circumstances.
I started engaging in folk creativity in 1970-1971. I have been engaged in creativity for 52 years.
Throughout my entire creative life, my goal has been to share knowledge and skills with children who aspire to explore the principles of creating images in traditional folk decorative painting. The foundation of innovation in pedagogical activities lies in the revival of decorative painting traditions through the genetic memory embedded in children.
I am the author of the revival of the decorative painting of Tavria. I founded and led children's studios: the folk "Chongar-sad" in Chongar, Henichesk district, Kherson region (1974–1987); "Chervona Kalyna" at Lyshnyanska secondary school (1987–1997); "Barvy Zdvizha" at the Makariv district center for children and youth creativity in Kyiv region (1997–2006).
I participated in nationwide exhibitions of folk art (1977-2012), the cultural program of the XXII Summer Olympic Games, and the First Festival "Kyiv Region Tourist-2012." Personal exhibitions were held in many cities of Ukraine and abroad. My works are preserved not only in museums and private collections in Ukraine but also in Bulgaria, Belgium, the Vatican, Georgia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Canada, Germany, Poland, Portugal, the USA, Finland, Switzerland, and Japan.
There are also interesting and significant events:
The film "Draw Your Flower" by the Kyiv Studio of Popular Science Films, 1980.
Liudmyla Vitkovska (folk painting). Art album. - K.: People's sources, 2008. - 232 p.
My most famous works include "Tavria Flower" (1974), "Mom's Flower" (1975), "Oh, the fire burns on the mountain" (1987), "Dear talk" (1997), "Spring evening" (2008), "Oh, the red river..." (2008), "Baturyn Cossack" (2008).
My creative creed is to celebrate the beauty of the inner spiritual state of a person and the surrounding world. I create decorative paintings in the style of Ukrainian folk painting, which is known worldwide. It originated in ancient times and continues to develop to this day. The foundation of my compositions includes the tree of life, bouquets, and other images.
In my works, I convey the beauty of my native land and the uniqueness of nature. Through the means of decorative painting, I narrate my emotions and thoughts. The images are symbols (birds, flowers, grains, color, etc.). A bird symbolizes freedom, space, love, friendship, the dream of happiness, and prosperity. Two birds represent love, while flowers represent the joy of existence.
Color plays a significant role in the composition, allowing me to convey my intentions. In folk art, all colors are beautiful, even black symbolizes not sadness but spring soil, which blooms under the warmth of the sun.
My paintings convey goodness, serve as talismans, and always carry positive energy for the joy and happiness of people. Although my works are decorative and stylized, they are closely connected to nature because everything I see and experience in the surrounding world is reflected in my compositions. For example, "Morning," where a bird sings, or "Evening," or "Dreamy Gardens."
I also create paintings in the styles of abstract painting and naive art.
My message to the world is to live with good thoughts, love each other, preserve nature so that there is no evil, and people are like flowers – happy!
Currently, I reside in Ukraine, in the Kyiv region.
