Modernism: Redefining Traditions

Modernism: Redefining Traditions

As usual, modernism in painting is not one specific style, but a combination of various artistic trends, united by common stylistic features and kindred philosophy. At the heart of modernism lies the desire of the master to create new forms of self-expression that differ from the generally accepted canons of painting. This is the embodiment of inner freedom and the desire for bold, innovative experiments with color, shape and composition. Works in the style of "modernism" are distinguished by the emancipation of the spirit and the indefatigable flight of imagination, which is often interpreted as a daring challenge to triviality.

How it all began

The beginning of modernism, as an artistic direction, art historians connect immediately with several events. This is an exhibition of the famous painting “Le d?jeuner sur l'herbe” by E. Manet in the Paris Salon des Refus?s (1863), as well as the creation of the painting “ L’Atelier du peintre. All?gorie R?elle d?terminant une phase de sept ann?es de ma vie artistique (et morale)” by J. Courbet (1855). Some researchers pay attention to the “Le Serment des Horaces” (1784) by Jacques-Louis David, which was written much earlier ... All these artists are united by the search for alternative means for expressing human life, without formalism and falsehood, without generally accepted canons and rigid frameworks.

In the 20th century, such a desire for freedom of creative expression takes on more daring (and sometimes frankly shocking forms). Modernist artists are increasingly moving away from the image of the surrounding reality as the viewer sees it, preferring to interpret their own feelings and emotions from a specific object. This tendency was not a absurd whim, but embodied the call of masters to see the “secret side” of the world and comprehend its deepest meanings. That is why modernism began to be seen not as a set of artistic techniques or simply as an original manner of drawing, but as a revolutionary philosophy of creativity. Classical modernism dominates the use of abstract forms and allegories, based on a deep philosophical subtext. The creation of modernism as a full-fledged direction encompasses many currents and a large time period, many countries and many different prominent personalities.

The many faces of modernism: the main directions

The emergence of modernism was a powerful impetus for the development of a number of individual styles, the main of which are: symbolism, impressionism, neo-impressionism and post-impressionism, expressionism, cubism, Fauvism, avant-garde, futurism, abstract painting, surrealism, Dadaism, etc. A little later, on the basis of modernism kinesthetic art and op art.

Despite the striking genre diversity, all styles of modernism have a number of common features. This desire to portray the “world of sensations” instead of the “world of things”, a departure from subject painting, constant creative experiments and utmost freedom of expression. Modernists pay great attention to the selection of colors and lines when building creative spaces. A characteristic feature is schematization and abstraction, the invitation of the viewer to search for meaning with the help of intuition. Here you will not see the classic "artistic truth" and realism, because on each canvas there is a subjective imprint of the inner world of a particular artist.

Many of the paintings by the masters are original manifestos and reflect an active social position. Modernism belongs to the elite areas of painting, to understand and appreciate all the charm of which is not accessible to everyone.
